Malibu Rising
"The sky is more blue in Malibu"
This is the second book I read during my holidays. I had a big crush on this vibrant story and these fascinating characters. The plot : Nina organizes an annual party to which the best of Malibu are invited. We follow the steps of preparing the party hour by hour, as we discover her brothers and sister, but also their parents with their chaotic relationship and lives as absent rockstars and cheating spouses.
I loved the construction of the novel which gives it a very good rhythm in addition to the true American style. Taylor Jenkins Red (who already seduced me with 'The Seven Husband of Evelyn Hugo') perfectly puts into words the American dream of luxury, stars, and shine. But she nevertheless manages to develop the cruel and cold reality that comes with it, with a touch of sunshine that always reigns in the beautiful city of Malibu.
The characters are perfectly drawn as well as the complexity of their relationship. Nina is an impressive and moving young woman. The author ingeniously addresses the heritage passed on to us by our parents, which shows by our own actions.
A great story about family ties, a novel full of emotions between anger, sadness, and joy. The author takes us on board with very endearing characters in a very intense story. I left these characters with great sadness because they touched me like rarely characters do. The kind of book you end up being lost, sad to leave to come back to reality.
A definition for this novel : the perfect summer book to read with the salty wind in your hair and your feet in the sand.
