Resistance Is Futile
"I'm begging you to leave. Save it. At any cost"
Who would've thought I would read a book about mathematics ? Certainly not me. But it turns out to be the most beautiful surprise I had reading a novel.
This novel came back to my memory after a friend asked me for recommendations. I read it last summer, under the burning sun of the south of France, when I begged my father to buy me something to read because I already finished the 2 books I had taken with me. So technically, I didn't choose this book, I took the first one that seemed slightly interesting. I like to call it destiny.
I certainly wasn't expecting that. The love story ? Predictable. The intelligence and wiseness of both of the main characters ? Expected, though incredibly well written. The problems ? I knew there was gonna be some (it's a mathematics book after all).
But the aliens ? Never saw that coming, and I bet you didn't either.
The characters are highly staggered but deeply endearing, and the critical look they bring on us humans and what the hell we're doing with our planet and ourselves is never too much. But above all, this book reminds us that life is worth it, with a little touch of sarcasm and eccentricity.
Jenny Colgan took me to a place I never thought I needed to visit, but that I now want to discover in all its aspects. Oh, and for those of you who like unpredictable ends wich comes like an uppercut, you should definitely read this book.
