The Selection

"Break my heart. Break it a thousand times if you want. It was always yours to break anyway."

Reading the back cover now, I feel like I've read a rather different book. Or is it the perception I had of it ?

This book as a whole left me with a funny impression. I didn't like America for a big part of the story. Most of the characters and dialogue are pretty cliched. The feelings and relationships between some characters are not believable. And yet, I really loved it !

Kiera Cass's writing is fluid and extremely pleasant, and although I have more than once rolled my eyes or raised my eyebrows in a circumflex accent, I must admit that I was taken in gambling and that I devoured this book eagerly wondering how it was going to end.

In fact, what I liked the most, and this from the beginning, is that we don't start at all in a (now) classic scheme of : the heroine has a friend who loves her but she doesn't know. She meets a man she loves but nothing is easy. She later discovers that her friend loves her and she finds herself in the middle of having to make a choice. Here, the heroine is ALREADY in love, and she doesn't want to hear about the Prince. She only agrees to go to the palace because each week spent within its walls, her family receives financial compensation.

Besides, I really like how the relationship between her and the Prince starts, and although the end of the book remains quite agreed, everything that happens in the middle is quite delicious.

It is therefore a book that will have surprised me from beginning to end, especially in the fact of making me change my mind every two chapters ! Characters that I sometimes hate, and sometimes love. A banal story that surprised me in its evolution. But feelings that made my heart sing, and writing that remains pleasant and strangely addictive from the first to the last page.

And, of course, it's a detail but one that is of little importance : the cover is just sublime. The pictures on the internet don't do it justice, and it got a beautiful slice that makes me melt every time I see it.
