The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
"Aren't you mad that all anyone ever talks about when they talk about you are the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo ?
No. Because they are just husbands. I am Evelyn Hugo."
I needed this novel. And it came to me at exactly the right time. Another Taylor Jenkins Red novel, the first one I read actually.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo looks like a basic romance to read with your brain unplugged, but I promise it's not. It is an original, rich, dense story, which above all offers portraits of characters with a striking intensity. The author serves her purpose very well by writing her story with rare fluidity and tension. We reach the ideal mix between entertainment and apprehension, all in the context, I must admit pleasant, of Old Hollywood.
The real stroke of genius of this novel : its format. A long interview with the legendary - and for my great sadness fictitious - actress Evelyn Hugo. This narrative mechanism works wonderfully and creates a bit of frustration that pushes you to continue reading until the late hours of the night. It's a railroad on which we are launched, a train that can't be stopped.
I fell in love with the diversity of characters and their commitments. This book gives everyone a great lesson of humility and encourages a certain open-mindedness and respect for others. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is one of those books whose reading the slightest interruption is heartbreaking, whose characters continue to haunt the memory long after the final chapter, and whose everything, from the exposition to the conclusion, seems perfectly orchestrated.
In just a few words : a bit of glitter, a lot of drama.
